Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue

CKFR Firefighter Hit the Slopes to Support Cancer Research and Education

Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue is proud of its members and the level of caring they exhibit both on and off the job. Many members of the department are involved in coaching children's sports, mentoring youth groups, assisting in the schools, giving through local civic organizations, and participating in fundraising event that benefit health and research such as United Way, NW Burn Foundation, Breast Cancer 3-Day Cure, MS Society, and the March of Dimes.

On March 6 - 7, CKFR's own FF Greg Snyder participated in the Hopes on the Slopes event supporting the American Cancer Society. Impressively, out of 70 teams, Greg and his team, Str8line which consists of 15 participants, victoriously raised the most money on behalf of the ACS with a total of $29,682.71. They also won the vertical feet challenge with over 1.2 million feet skied in a 24-hour period. This is the second year Greg's team won both top honors in fundraising and vertical feet.

Individually Greg placed fourth in the top fundraisers out of 850 participants by meeting 100% his fund raising goal of $2,500. Greg and his twin brother, Mark, skied together nearly non-stop from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 a.m. the next morning finally calling it quits after muscle fatigue set in and estimating they had achieved their goal of skiing 100,000 vertical feet. They finished with nearly 100 runs and 107,000 vertical feet.

Greg thanks everyone who made a donation to help support him and his team in their efforts to raise money and awareness on behalf of the American Cancer Society. Greg states that "Nearly everyone has had someone close to them who has had a battle with cancer, and I was inspired to do this event in memory of my dad who lost his battle with cancer in 1993". This year's event at Stevens Pass raised over $173,970. Imagine…A world without cancer.
